INDIA & LIVERPOOL CITY REGION
Trading With India
Trade & investment opportunities between India and the Liverpool region were under discussion at an event organised by the UK India Business Council (UKIBC) and The Mersey Partnership (TMP) on 2nd November.
The event, attended by around 80 people at the Partnership for Learning Centre alongside Jaguar Landrover, Halewood, successfully raised awareness and stimulated debate about investment with India for an audience which included local companies across all business sectors.
Speakers included Amitabh Jain, Minister (Economic) from the Indian High Commission in London and Amit Dev Mehta, Senior Vice President of Tata Capital, part of the Tata group which owns Jaguar Landrover and former Cheshire chemicals company Brunner Mond. Sir Thomas Harris, vice chairman of Liverpool FC shirt sponsors Standard Chartered Bank also addressed the audience.
The Indian economy offers many opportunities for UK businesses. Equally, Indian businesses have made substantial investments in the UK. The event demonstrated how businesses of all sizes can share in these opportunities. It also included practical guidance provided by key business support organisations and a case study presented by Graham Edwards, Director of Trantor Tractors, Cheshire which has extensive experience of successfully trading in India.
Brian Thorp, North West Director of the UKIBC said “UKIBC has become the ‘go to’ organisation for companies interested in trading with India and with such a massive infrastructure deficit there requiring billions of pounds to be spent, UK companies have incredible opportunities open to them.” He also commented that Merseyside was particular well-placed to trade with India because of its port facilities and excellent motorway networks.
SUMMIT SUCCESS FOR THE NORTH WEST
Businesse
s from the North West who attended the UKIBC summit conference at Manchester’s prestigious Bridgewater Hall were given the opportunity to meet on a one-to-one basis with Indian delegates brought to the region by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). Led by Dr Gunveena Chadha, Head of the CII in the UK and Mr Ramesh Datla, Chairman of the CII National MSME Council in India, the group had enjoyed business meetings in the South of England before coming to Manchester as guests at a pre-Summit dinner hosted by Manchester’s inward investment agency MIDAS. The Indian delegation were also at the Summit conference the following day where they and around 500 delegates were welcomed by UKIBC President, Lord Karan Bilimoria.
His Excellency Mr Nalin Surie, the Indian High Commissioner to the UK was a ke
y speaker at the Summit, along with Peter Sands, the Group Chief Executive of Standard Chartered Bank.
A well received interactive panel discussion and question & answer session featured Sir Mark Wallport, Director of The Wellcome Trust. Parallel breakout sessions covering 6 key industry sectors proved very popular with businesses, allowing them to tap into a great deal of expertise from speakers and presenters with more in-depth knowledge of their particular markets.
The Summit also offered delegates the opportunity to “Meet The Experts” in the exhibition area - from key organisations such as UK Trade & Investment (UKTI), KPMG and PwC to MLS Chase LLP, Rothschild, HSBC and The Forum of Private Business to name just a few.
There was an exceptional turn out at the evening networking reception, allowing delegates to make some very useful links with other businesses keen to share expertise or discuss the substantial opportunities open to companies wanting to trade with India. The reception closed with remarks by Sandra Brusby OBE, Head of the India Business Unit NW who introduced legendary former Indian cricketer Farokh Engineer. Representatives from Manchester United Football Club spoke about the club’s contribution to the Manchester economy and delighted the “red section” of the audience by raffling off a framed shirt signed by the United team.
Feedback from delegates attending the first-ever UKIBC conference outside of London has been extremely encouraging and we look forward to welcoming the Summit back to the North West again in 2012 to allow even more businesses to take advantage of the bilateral trade opportunities available between the UK and India.
