DELEGATION FOCUS: Infrastructure
The UK India Business Council and UKTI are taking an infrastructure focused delegation to Coimbatore and Chennai in October 2010. The key activitity in Chennai will be the Green Buildings Congress along with a wider programme in both citiies organised by UKTI.
The Government of India is projected to invest over USD 1 trillion in infrastructure projects over the next 5 years, which presents huge opportunities for UK companies. Specifically in South India, there are major opportunities for UK companies in transport (metro rail projects, high speed corridor links and major road projects); port modernisation and expansion in Chennai and Ennore, special economic zones and commercial & residential complexes.

UK-INDIA GRADUATE WORK EXPERIENCE PROGRAMME
Do you want to enhance your company's links with India?
The UK-India Graduate Work Experience Programme is an ideal way for your business to establish or strengthen links with India. Funded by the UK government, the programme gives India's top graduates the opportunity to take part in an internship at a UK company for between 12 and 50 weeks. All interns will have first-hand experience of Indian culture, language, education and business practices, providing UK companies with a 'pipeline' of graduate talent to filter back to their offices in India. All graduates taking part in the programme will have guaranteed visas and all logistics and administration will be handled by GTI Recruiting Solutions who are working with the UK-India Education and Research Initiative (UKIERI). The only cost to companies taking part is the interns salary.

UK AND INDIA TO COLLABORATE ON £10 MILLION RESEARCH PROJECT TO DEVELOP COST EFECTIVE SOLAR ENERGY SOLUTIONS
UK and Indian ministers have announced the launch of two multi-million pound research programmes to develop cost-effective and efficient solar energy solutions. UK Minister for Business, Innovation and Skills, Pat McFadden, and Indian Minister for Science and Technology, Prithviraj Chavan, announced the new collaboration whilst co-chairing the bilateral India-UK Science and Innovation Council in New Delhi.
Mr. McFadden said: "Our historic ties and close collaboration in many fields mean the UK and India are natural partners of choice in science, technology and innovation. This major collaboration plays to our strengths, and will maximise our potential to lead the world in high-quality, low-cost solar cell technology.” Mr. McFadden is currently undertaking an official visit to India.
INVESTORS PREDICT EMERGING MARKETS WILL DELIVER BETTER RETURNS THAN UK EQUITIES IN 2010
Investors are keeping faith with emerging markets in 2010. Recent research found that 53% of Barclays Stockbrokers clients believe emerging markets will deliver the greatest returns on their investments this year. The poll investigated the opinions of investors with regard to the countries they perceived as likely to give the best positive returns. Clients revealed the emerging market which they consider likely to perform the best; 36% thought India, 32% backed China and 24% favoured Brazil.
Barbara-Ann King,Head of Investments, Barclays Stockbrokers, said: "As the second of the emerging market powerhouses in Asia, India is well positioned to emerge as one of the leading global economies, so it is positive to see our clients are looking to capitalise on this. The dynamics of India's economy are rich and varied, and with an average annual GDP growth rate of 5.8% across the past two decades, India has been one of the fastest growing economies in the world and looks well positioned to maintain that rate of development."
UK PARTIALLY LIFTS BAN ON STUDENTS VISAS FOR INDIA
The UK has announced a partial lifting of the ban on students visas in north India. This is welcome relief for the thousands of students who are at an advanced stage of enrolment at British universities. Mr. McFadden, Minister for Business, Innovation and Skills, said, "The suspension was taken in response to a huge surge in applications over a very short period of time." He added that, “I am delighted to be able to announce that, from 1st March, this suspension will be lifted for all students wanting to study higher education courses, whether foundation degrees, undergraduate or postgraduate."
INDIA AND UK AGREE TO INCREASE FDI INFLOWS
The United Kingdom and India have agreed to increase mutual foreign direct investment flows, and have decided to increase bilateral co-operation in manufacturing, innovation and green technologies. At a meeting of the Indo-UK Joint Economic & Trade Commission (JETCO), both countries agreed on the need to further improve the regulatory environment and boost trade and investment.
The UK is among India’s major trading partners. The trade between the two countries stood at around £7.7 Billion in 2008-09 and is increasing. “The massive infrastructure development programme being undertaken in India presents huge opportunities for foreign investment. India recognised the experience of the UK in infrastructure development through Public Private Partnerships, which could be gainfully exploited for the establishment of capacity building programmes in India,” said Commerce Minister Anand Sharma.
UK AND INDIA SIGN CIVIL NUCLEAR AGREEMENT
Britain has signed an agreement on nuclear energy cooperation with India. The declaration, signed in New Delhi, will help British companies collaborate with Indian partners in the department of civil nuclear technology. This will help both countries achieve energy security and low carbon growth.
"The agreement really opens the door to a discussion that can begin between some of the best UK-based engineering companies and the nuclear authorities in India. Given that we in the UK are also going to be expanding our own civil nuclear power source in the coming years, getting that supply chain right not only for our own purposes but for the purposes of export is a major opportunity for British industry." Minister for Business, Innovation and Skills, Pat McFadden said.
